According to a reputable source, a total of eighty-eight registered nurses resigned their posts at the University Hospital of the West Indies to take up positions in the US, the UK and Germany. You can believe it 88 nurses lef from one hospital gone a forrin last year, yuh can imagine?!
UHWI short staffed and needs nurses
The hospital is now in recruit mode seeking to replace these persons as quickly as possible.There is now a significant strain at the hospital where the remaining staff members are struggling to pick up the slack. There are complaints that patients have to wait much longer to receive care. It is believed that more nurses are planning to leave, some early in this year (2020).
Even the hospital's Chief Executive Officer Kevin Allen, admitted that it was a regular occurrence for nurses to flee the hospital for opportunities overseas.
He said:
“Nurses come and go all the time. It's a labour of love. We can't compete with the US, Canada, the UK, and the latest one that is opening up now is Germany.”
Yuh hear if you're an RN, Germany a look fi yuh!
According the UHWI's CEO, the
hospital has resorted to heavy recruiting taking on 750 to 780 at any given time to manage the shortfall.
“Yes, we have nurses resigning every month," he said.
“If you go there [hospital] at nights the ratio is awful, and awful nursing-patient ratio can compromise the quality of care that is offered — so it is bad. I'm not going to hide that. It is bad; but, what to do? People have their families to take care of and stuff, so they leave. It's several factors, but you know the salary is the driver of all things. If you have 700 - 800 nurses, people [will] resign; every month you get resignations,” he continued.

9,000,000 nurses wanted globally by 2030!
The President of the Nurses Association of Jamaica (NAJ) gave an eye opening revelation. Miss Carmen Johnson noted that there are nine million (9,000,000) nursing positions that need to be filled globally by 2030. Developed countries such as the USA are using the many benefits they can offer to lure nurses from Jamaica and other developing countries.She revealed:
“We know the UK needed a million [nurses] last year (2019), US said they needed a little over a million last year, and what we do know is that in the other countries the markets have also opened up because their nurses are either going into different professions, or privately, or they are going to other countries.”
She also believes that with Brexit under way, the demand for nurses in the UK will increase. She's right.
Brexit will open more nursing jobs in the UK to Jamaicans
On Thursday, January 16, Britain's Telegraph newspaper reported that the UK's National Health Service (NHS) is buckling under the weight of rising demand as it faces a severe staffing shortage.It is expected that with nurses from the European Union beginning to leave the NHS in greater numbers (after the Brexit is complete their former work arrangements under the European Union/UK laws will be null and void), the shortage of nursing staff will be more obvious.
According to the NHS report more than 40,000 nursing roles are currently unfilled amid a sector-wide crisis.
The reports states that experts warned that three things need to happen simultaneously to fill the gap
- more recruits from abroad,
- training more UK nurses,
- holding on to the current workforce.
The report also indicated that their strategy of relaxing visa restrictions in 2018 gained them 8000 new nurses to the Service.
These overseas recruiters are aggressively pursuing our nurses. Some of them have even paid off our nurses loans so they can get them to work for them! Don't believe me? Read what the Health Minister, Dr. Christopher Tufton had to say:
“The market is very open, and recruitment happens on a continuous basis by agencies that are employed or contracted to recruit. Some of them come to Jamaica; they advertise in the media for recruitment sessions and they do all the necessary paperwork, the work permits, everything. In some instances [they] pay off the loans that the nurses have, and so on.
“So, there's a very aggressive recruitment drive because of global shortage and competition, and Jamaican nurses are particularly attractive. So I would say most go to the US...,” Dr. Tufton said.
So in conclusion, if you're a qualified and trained nurse, you have the potential to gain employment both here in Jamaica and abroad, especially if you're a Registered Nurse. The nursing profession is facing a global shortage and more and more persons will be needed to fill that gap. You're skills are in demand and recruiters and employers are scrambling to put you to work!
