 Author: S. Jeffery

Whether you have been climbing the corporate ladder or fresh out of college/university and about to start, it is important that as soon as possible you equip yourself with key skills necessary to make your career success easier. Below I have presented a list of skills that each of us (including mi-self, thinking of learning some Spanish, "Tu me entiendes") should have at least two or three of, to make our career journey or job hunt more profitable.
Please read and share your thoughts in the comments section. Enjoy!

Adobe Photoshop
If you're looking to pursue a more creative career, such as photo editing or graphic design, a basic knowledge of Photoshop is usually a requirement.

Microsoft Excel
When we think of Excel we think of accounting,  but it is not always the case that only accountants are required to learn this software.  As a matter of fact data entry type jobs may require that you are familiar with this software. Consider this list:
  • Administrative personnel (Admin Assistants, etc)
  • Marketing personnel
  • Management Consultant
  • Banking and Investment
In fact research has shown that brushing up on your Excel skill could just be the thing that can boost your earning power in the job market.* While improving your Excel ability consider learning QuickBooks also.

Spanish or another foreign language
In today's global economy where it may be absolutely essential to communicate with persons from different nations, learning a second language is a definite advantage. Languages such as Spanish, which has over 400 millions native speakers of the language should be considered.* Other popular languages besides English and Spanish are:
  • Mandarin (Chinese language) there are over a billion speakers of this language. It's the world's most popular language with more native speakers of the language than English (360 million) and Spanish (405 million) combined!
  • Hindi/Urdu
  • Arabic
  • Portuguese
  • Bengali
  • Russian
  • Japanese
  • Punjabi (language spoken in Pakistan and India)*

I would say that Spanish and Mandarin should be everyone's choice to learn. Just saying...
Admittedly learning a new language is not an easy task because it forces you to rewire your brain a bit. But the benefits of learning a second language are well documented. People who are bilingual tend to have better memories and are better at multitasking. They are more desirable for certain jobs, too.

Web design and development

A basic understanding of web design and development is useful to a variety of careers, and not all of them are based in tech. Basic software (languages..eh hem) used in web development are: HTML, CSS and JavaScript. These skills are in high demand, think about it.

WordPress
Whether you're an established editor moving from print copy to digital, or a new graduate preparing  for your first job, everyone working for a website should understand how the back end of sites work. Each content-management system (CMS) varies from publication to publication, but mastering WordPress is a great starting point

Public speaking
No matter what industry you work in, one thing's for sure: You will most likely have to speak in front of a large crowd at some point in your career. Some people are naturally gifted at public speaking while others squirm at the idea of being on stage. Fortunately there are online courses you can take that will help you to master your fears as well as courses you can take at local colleges/universities to help you on your way.

SEO
In this digital age where information and content is extremely important, and competition being fierce as it is, even online, you need to equip yourself with the skills necessary to stand out and pull customers in your direction (your website or blog). Consider learning search-engine optimization (SEO). It is a great tool that gets your website noticed by search engines and also gives you the data you need to adequately measure success via clicks, likes, and shares. Personnel such as website Administrator, Social Media Coordinators need to understand at least the basics of this powerful tool. By adding SEO to your skill set, you're showing your potential employers that you have what it takes to execute a high-trafficking article or successful social-media campaign.

Google Analytics
To some extent SEO and Google Analytics go hand in hand (thanks Google). You can find courses online that will teach how to do this. You can also learn from reading online articles. Reading and putting into practice is a good first step. Since you're learning about how to optimize (SEO) your articles and campaigns, you need a way to record and analyze your results.

Product management
This is an important skill to have! But what is it? Product management is an organizational lifecycle function within a company dealing with the planning, forecasting, and production, or marketing of a product or products at all stages of the product lifecycle.* Marketing execs, entrepreneurs, personnel in any form of manufacturing industry need this skill! Getting a new idea off the ground and in front of potential investors can be hard. Especially if for a new start-up scouting for investors but that's where you come in. Learning this skill will make you invaluable to your employer, because you can create the budget, plan and presentation (public speaking skill) that can impress the investor and have you in your employer's good books! Go for it!
