Registered General Nurse (Kingston, Jamaica) - Bellevue Hospital

Job Purpose:

The Registered General Nurse is responsible for direct and indirect nursing care and treatment of patients/clients in Primary, Secondary and Tertiary care facilities.

Key Responsibilities:

Clinical
  • Develops, implements, evaluates a nursing care plan for the individual patient/client using all relevant data.
  • Observes and records vital signs and symptoms, adjust and modify care plan according to observation made of the patient’s physical and mental state.
  • Interpret and administer prescriptions, treatments and monitors the patient’s action to ensure the best possible outcome.
  • Anticipate potential predictable problems and institute early intervention to prevent or reduce occurrence eg. Disorientation, pain, physiological altercations, disturbance in acuity, rest and sleep patterns, elimination, and nutrition.
  • Acts promptly and effectively in emergency situations.
  • Performs nursing procedures that are appropriate to the need, age and acuity level of the patient.
  • Provide personal care, comfort, supportive and protective measures which enhance patients coping mechanism in adjusting to illness and rehabilitation, mobility and independence.
  • Employs nursing measures to facilitate patient/client physical, emotional, psychosocial, and spiritual well-being.
  • Monitor the nutritional care of patients with special attention to therapeutic diets.
  • Document information promptly, clearly and completely and relates as necessary to relevant persons
  • Ensure proper collection, identification, storage and safe transportation of specimens to the laboratory with appropriate requisition form.
  • Perform simple diagnostic tests and interprets findings eg. Urinalysis
  • Understand the proper functioning and utilization of equipment pertinent to duties being performed.
  • Introduce and maintain rehabilitative, occupational, and recreated measures to facilitate progress.
  • Participates in implementing disaster preparedness programmes at unit level.
  • Participates in quality assurance programmes of unit.
  • Ensures environmental safety of patient care unit and sees that appropriate health and safety measures are in place.
  • Implements discharge/care plan including referral to appropriate agency.
  • Performs and maintains a therapeutic nurse patient/client relationship.
Administration
  • Supervises auxiliary and support staff where necessary. Assist in the cost effective usage of supplies and equipment.
  • Assumes in charge responsibility when delegate especially afternoon and night duty.
  • Assist in identification and requisition of equipment supplies, pharmaceutical agents including dangerous drugs.
  • Participate in the preparation of ward reports.
  • Assist immediate supervisor with general management of ward/facility and its immediate environs.
  • Participates in performance evaluation of auxiliary and support staff; resolves personnel issues and or refers them to immediate supervisor.

Education
  • Educates patients and families regarding his/her current health problems, self-care, and continuity of care through compliance with therapeutic regime, habitation and rehabilitation measures including occupational and recreational therapy.
  • Teaches patients/clients and family health promotion, disease prevention and health maintenance.
  • Participates in the clinical teaching and evaluate of nursing students and auxiliaries.
  • Participate in In-service education.
  • Attend professional education programmes.
Research
  • Prepares and prevents case studies.
  • Participates in evaluation and action research eg. Nursing audits.
  • Contributes appropriate data through documentation.
  • Participates in other research studies
General
  • Responsible for own professional development through continuing education.
  • Set goals for professional growth and upward mobility.
  • Responsible and accountable for own practice.
  • Recognizes professional responsibility as extending beyond the care facility into community and participates in community activities.
Required Qualification and Experience:
  • Certificate/ Diploma/ Bachelor of Science in Nursing from an accredited school of nursing
  • Registration with the Nursing Council of Jamaica
  • Valid Nursing License
  • New graduate with beginning professional skills to a maximum of five (5) years moving from novice to expert staff nurse.
