Job Purpose:

Under the general directions of the Nursing team, the Enrolled Assistant Nurse is directly responsible to the nurse in charge of ward or department. The nurse in charge gives a specific assignment for patient care, taking into consideration the needs of the patient and skills of the assistant nurse. The Enrolled Assistant Nurse works within the limitation of the job description in giving care to selective patients.

CARE OF PATIENT

Hygiene
  • Bed baths- am and pm care
  • Oral hygiene
  • Care of the hair
  • Skin care, back care, pressure point
  • Care of nails
  • Care of feet
  • Perineal care
Posture and Exercise
  • Positioning and turning patients
  • Assisting ambulatory patients
  • Assist with exercise routine e.g. post optative
Nutrition
  • Preparing the patients to receive his/her tray
  • Feeding patients
  • Assist with serving and carrying trays as necessary
  • Intragastric feeding for selected patients
  • Preparing and checking special diets
  • Recording intakes
Elimination
  • Handling bedpan and urinal
  • Bedpan rounds
  • Changing incontinent patients
  • Tidying infants
  • Simple enemata
  • Collection, measuring and recording of:
  • Urine
  • Emesis
  • Sputum
  • Releasing Catheters
  • Testing specimens for the albumen, sugar and acetone
  • Preparing specimens for the laboratory
  • Changing colostomy dressing and tidying patients

  • Oral
  • Subcutaneous-checked by nurse

  • Preoperative shaving and preliminary preparation of skin

  • Sharing the responsibility of the patients to the community
Care of equipment and supplies
  • Sterilization of utensils, instruments and syringes
  • Preparing linen for laundry
  • Checking linen in and out
  • Sundays and holidays- count of soiled linen
  • Putting linen away
  • Checking and storing patients cloths and valuables
TRANSPORTATION, MESSENGER, RECEPTIONIST
  • Accompany patients to other department within and outside hospital
  • Answering the telephone
  • Meeting the visitors
  • Errands to other departments-chart room, dispensary, etc.
Relationship
  • Maintain good interpersonal relationship with the patients, visitors and staff.
  • Expected to carry out procedures according to the rules of the hospital
Required Qualification and Experience:
  • Diploma in Enrolled Assistant Nursing
  • Registration with the Nursing Council of Jamaica
  • Valid Nursing License
