Patient Care Assistant (HSC/HS 6)
Job Purpose
Under the direction of the Nursing Staff, the incumbent is responsible for providing support to the Medical Services Branch, facilitating general patient care and maintaining a hygienic, safe and orderly facility in keeping with the objectives of the Branch.
Key Responsibility Areas
Technical/Professional Responsibilities:
- Assists with the preparation for conducting all clinics in an efficient manner, e.g. sterilisation of equipment, etc
- Assists with the organization and maintenance of order and discipline in the clinical area
- Assists with the admission of patients engaging in such activities as "pulling cards", weighing and recording
- Record vital signs such as temperature, blood pressure, pulse or respiration rate as required
- Assists with explaining the intake forms when necessary
- Prepares patients for physical examination
- Assists with the administration of immunizations as directed
- Assists with dressings and treatments of minor ailments as directed
- Participates in post-clinic discussions that should embody evaluation and continuity of patient care
- Helps patients in distress by responding to emergencies
- Assists with the organization of healthy lifestyle clinics
- Assists with the administration of immunizations
- Assists with the distribution of supplement and medication as well as applying simple dressings
- Assists with the preparation of visual aids to enhance teaching
- Assists in the planning, demonstration and distribution of appropriate literature as required
- Assists in motivating the JCF populace to utilize the services
- Manages incidents and ensures the continuing safety of self and others
- Assesses casualties and finds out the nature and cause of injuries, prioritizing based upon medical needs
- Arranges for further medical help or other emergency services on client's behalf
- Provides appropriate first aid treatment
- Makes notes/observations of casualties and completes paperwork as required
- Provides a handover report when further medical help arrives
- Welcomes patients and visitors by greeting then in person or on the telephone and answering and/or referring their inquiries
- Optimizes patients' satisfaction, provider time and treatment room utilization by scheduling appointments
- Keeps clinics on schedule by notifying provider of patient's arrival; reviewing service delivery compared to schedule
- Informs provider/patient of any service delays
- Prepares health records in advance of patient's visit
- Records and compiles statistical data and accurately files documents
- Ensures availability of treatment information by filing and retrieving patient records
- Protects patients' rights by maintaining confidentiality of personal information
- Updates patients' information in the Health Management Information System
- Assists with data entry into the SPSS software for research purposes
- Comforts patients by anticipating patients' anxieties; answering patients' questions; maintaining the reception area
- Assists with the MSB inventory of stocks in triage, screening and treatment areas
- Assists with the scheduling of recalibration of clinical equipment such as blood machines, etc
- Maintains the smooth operation of systems at the MSB by following policies and procedures; reporting needed changes
- Assists with mass programmes as directed by supervisors
- Participates in conferences, seminars, etc
- Administers follow-up care as directed by nurse in charge
- Collects specimens as directed by the Registered Nurse
- Provides simple demonstration to support the teaching given
- Reports obvious health hazards in the environment
Minimum Required Education and Experience:
- Certificate in Practical Nursing from a recognized institution
- One (1) year experience working in a caring environment/role
- Exposure to health hazards
- NCTVET certified
- Valid food handler's permit
