Dental Nurse (Clarendon, Jamaica) - Southern Regional Heath Authority (SRHA) - Clarendon Health Department

The Southern Regional Health Authority (SRHA), a Statutory Body under the Ministry of Health & Wellness responsible for the management and operation of Public Health Services within the Parishes of Clarendon, Manchester and St. Elizabeth, invites applications from suitably qualified persons for the following position at the CLARENDON HEALTH DEPARTMENT: Dental Nurse 1 – (HTAC/DN 1) – VACANT - (Salary range $3,241,533 – $3,853,164 per annum and the relevant applicable allowances)

Job Summary
Under the general supervision of the Dental Surgeon, the incumbent will organize and implement
oral health education / promotion activities in health clinics, schools and communities and to carry
out prescribed preventive, curative, diagnostic and rehabilitative dental work for children, as well
as community members. He/She will plan and organize dental health interventions, and to
coordinate the work of subordinates within a health district.
Qualifications and Experience:
  • Certificate/Degree in Dental Nursing
  • Current Registration with the Dental Council

Technical
  • Comprehensive knowledge of National Oral Health Policy

  • Sound knowledge of equipment. instruments, materials, methods, and procedures used in dentistry and pharmaceuticals used in dentistry.
  • Sound knowledge of Infection Control Policy
  • Sound knowledge of Socio-Cultural Practices and their impact on health
  • Sound knowledge of Staff Orders for the Public Service
  • Sound knowledge of Data Protection Act
  • Proficient in Teaching Methods and Oral Health Education/Promotion
  • Trained in BLS/PALS
  • Proficient in the use of relevant Computer Applications (Microsoft-Excel)
Key responsibilities will include:
  • Planning and organizing oral health education / promotion programmes for schools and communities.
  • Carrying out routine and diagnostic oral examination on children.
  • Performing necessary preventive and rehabilitative oral health procedures on children,
  • to include: scaling, prophylaxis, the application of fissure sealant restoration, extraction of deciduous teeth, pulpotomy, stainless steel crowns.
  • Keeping accurate and up to date records of all treatment given to, and contact made with clients.
  • Referring more complex dental problems to the dental surgeon.
  • Preparing and submitting to parish supervisor, monthly, statistical reports.
  • Preparing quarterly and half yearly status reports for a health district.
  • Assisting with the planning and implementation of oral health programmes within a parish or zone.
  • Assisting with the supervision of dental staff, and the coordination of the dental programme within a health district.
  • Giving advice, counselling and instructions to subordinates; hears and resolve complaints, and refers group grievances and unresolved complaints to higher supervisory authority.
  • Acting as resource person at the local level in the dissemination of oral health information.
  • Attending and participating in meetings at clinic, health district, and parish level.
  • Attending and participating in training sessions planned for dental staff.
  • Liaising with other health care providers and non-government organizations.

Dental Nurse/Hygienist, Dental Assistant (Kingston, Jamaica) - Jamaica Defence Force - (Civilian)

  1. Dental Nurse/Hygienist (HTAC/DN 2) - Two (2) positions: Vacant - Garrison Administrative Unit (Health Services Corps) - Salary range: $3,759,184 - $4, 468, 488 per annum and any allowance(s) attached to the post.

GARRISON ADMINISTRATIVE UNIT (HEALTH SERVICES CORPS)

Dental Nurse/Hygienist (HTAC/DN 2) - Two (2) Positions: Vacant

Under the general direction of the Force Dental Officer, the incumbent is responsible for assessing and providing oral health treatment to patients.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Patients screened
  • Triage assessments done
  • Medical health history reviews conducted
  • Vital signs taken, routine and diagnostics oral examination
  • Patient records maintained
  • Dental radiographs (X-rays) taken and developed 
  • Local anesthetics administered
  • Assist with the supervision of the Dental Assistant and Dental Assistant Administrator
  • Information on oral hygiene strategies provided
  • Patient records maintained and updated
  • Vital signs of patients taken and recorded before dentist proceeds with examination process
  • Patients provided with information on appropriate oral hygiene strategies
  • Dental radiographs taken and developed in accordance to standards
  • Thorough assessment of oral health trauma, making provision for appropriate treatment
  • Prepare reports as necessary
  • Proper oral health and dental hygiene procedures administered to all patients in keeping with specified standards and guidelines

  • Valid dental nursing license
  • Two (2) to three (3) years of experience working within the dental field

Dental Assistant (HTAC/DA 1) - One (1) position: Vacant) 

Under the general direction of the Force Dental Officer, the incumbent is responsible for the preparation of surgeries for daily procedure and stocktaking of materials and instruments.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Ensure that service given patients conforms with the dental regulation and guidelines of the Health and Dental Act
  • Record treatments and information on patients in their dockets
  • Administer appropriate first and technique to patients in need
  • Take and record patient's medical and dental history and vital signs (blood pressure, temperature and pulse)
  • Maintain and service autoclave and equipment 
  • Provide post-operative instructions prescribed by the Dentist
  • Prepare patient, sterilize and disinfect instruments
  • Set up instruments and trays for dental surgeon
  • Prepare materials for specific procedures
  • Assist dentist in management of medical and dental emergencies
  • Prepare surgeries for daily procedure
  • Chairside assisting of Oral Health instructions
  • Chairside assisting of specialists - implant orthodontic
  • Post-operative and oral instructions are given to patients
