JOB SUMMARY
The Hospital Porter provides essential support in ensuring the safe, efficient, and timely movement of patients, equipment, supplies, and other items throughout the hospital. The incumbent will assist patients upon arrival, respond promptly to emergency calls, and provide courteous and professional service to patients, visitors, and staff at all times.
Main duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Assist incoming patients from transport as necessary and transport or guide them to the respective departments.
- Assist discharged patients with leaving the facility, upon request.
- Safely transport in-patients and out-patients to and from various hospital departments to access care and services.
- Transport medical supplies, documents, equipment, and specimens as directed.
- Assist with the changing and safe handling of medical gas cylinders as needed.
- Respond with urgency and professionalism to emergency calls requiring patient transport or support services.
- Ensure wheelchairs, stretchers, and other portering equipment are clean, functional, and available for use.
- Observe and report any unusual incidents, safety hazards, or security concerns immediately to a Supervisor.
- Support the hospital’s infection prevention and control protocols, including hand hygiene and equipment sanitation.
- Perform other related duties assigned by a Supervisor in keeping with the role.
- High School School-Leaving Certificate or equivalent.
- Prior experience in a hospital, healthcare, or customer service setting would be an asset.
- Customer Service Training an Asset
- CPR/AED Training
- Willingness to provide high-quality service to patients, visitors, and the institution.
- Alertness and attention to detail, particularly in matters relating to patient safety and security.
- Good physical health and stamina with the ability to tolerate long periods of standing, walking, or lifting.
- Ability to work effectively under pressure and respond quickly in emergencies.
- Reliability, honesty, cooperation, and respectfulness in all duties.
- Good interpersonal skills with a courteous and compassionate approach to patients, families and members of the healthcare team.
- Willingness to accept responsibility, follow instructions, and work as part of a team.
- Dedication, self-motivation, and flexibility, including availability to work shifts, weekends, and public holidays.
