Health Aide Worker (Kingston, Jamaica) - Department of Correctional Services

Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates to fill the post of:  Health Aid Worker (Contract), Specialized and Medical Services Division

Six (6) persons are needed.

Job Purpose

To provide technical nursing care to patients, ensuring that the clinical environment is safe, and contributes to the efficient functioning of the hospital under the supervision and direction of the Medical Officer in charge.

Requirements

• Certificate in Practical Nursing
• At least one (1) year experience in the related field

Responsibilities

CARE OF PATIENT:

• Hygiene

1. Bed baths - am and pm care
2. Oral hygiene
3. Care of the hair
4. Skin care, back care, pressure point
5. Care of nails
6. Care of feet
7. Perineal care

• Posture and Exercise

1. Positioning and turning patients
2. Assisting ambulatory patients
3. Assist with exercise routine

• Nutrition

1. Preparing the patients to receive his tray
2. Feeding patients
3. Assist with serving and carrying trays as necessary
4. Intragastric feeding for selected patients
5. Preparing and checking special diets
6. Recording intakes

• Elimination

1. Handling bedpan and urinal
2. Bedpan rounds
3. Changing incontinent patients
4. Simple enemata
5. Collection, measuring and recording of:

✓ Urine

✓ Emesis

✓ Sputum

✓ Releasing Catheters

✓ Testing specimens for the albumen, sugar and acetone

✓ Preparing specimens for the laboratory

✓ Changing colostomy dressing and tidying patients

• Treatments

Administration of medication when delegated:
✓ Oral
✓ Subcutaneous checked by nurse

1. Application of compresses
2. Septic dressing-simple
3. Preoperative shaving and preliminary preparation of skin
4. Douches
5. Care of the body after death
6. Preparing and supervising inhalation

• Observation

1. Checking, reporting and recording vital signs
2. Temperature, pulse, respiration
3. Blood pressure

• Care of equipment and supplies

1. Sterilization of utensils, instruments and syringes
2. Preparing linen for laundry
3. Checking linen in and out
4. Sundays and holidays- count of soiled linen
5. Putting linen away
6. Checking and storing patients’ cloths and valuables

TRANSPORTATION:

• Accompanies patients to other facilities within and outside the Correctional Centre’s hospital Relationship
• Maintains good interpersonal relationship with the inmates/patients, visitors and staff.
• Carries out procedures according to the rules of the Correctional facility

Other related duties:

• Performs any other duty in the interest of the department that may be assigned from time to time

Required knowledge, skills & competencies

• Excellent oral and written communication skills;
• Ability to work as part of a team;
• Ability to interact with internal and external clients with excellent customer service;
• Ability to use industrial grade equipment;
• Good human relations and interpersonal skills;
• Strong analytical skills and good judgement;
• Flexible and willing to work under pressure;
• Knowledge of the functions of a nursing department;
• Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.

Salary Scale: $873,000.00 per annum and any applicable allowances.
