Phlebotomist (Kingston, Jamaica) - University Hospital of the West Indies


 Applications are invited from suitably qualified persons to fill the position of Phlebotomist (HTAC/HT 1) at the University Hospital of the West Indies

Summary of Duties:

Under the general direction of the Senior Medical Technologist, the Phlebotomist is responsible for:

  • Identifying blood group using the slide method
  • Performing weight checks
  • Recording medical and personal data and enter information on donor cards
  • Entering rejected donors - enter information in reject book
  • Labeling donor bags for blood with information
  • Entering information in donor record s=books
  • Preparing and doing phlebotomy on donors, and collecting one (1) pint of blood plus samples for processing
  • Removing and discarding needles properly
  • Stripping and sealing tubes on donor bags with blood
  • Sending same to blood bank for processing
  • Providing first aid for donors who have adverse reaction
  • Providing information to prospective donors about blood donation
  • Teaching medical students one (1) hour on Mondays about blood donation procedures
  • Assisting doctors in setting up IV lines on donor when needed

Minimum Required Education and Experience:
High School Diploma
Completion of an accredited Phlebotomy training course
Experience in the use of the standard computer applications
