Medical Laboratory Technologist (Kingston, Jamaica, W.I.) - Andrews Memorial Hospital
The Medical Technologist is responsible for performing routine and specialized laboratory tests that assist physicians in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease. The role requires a high level of accuracy, adherence to established laboratory protocols, and compliance with quality, safety, and regulatory standards. The Medical Technologist plays a critical role in patient care by ensuring timely, reliable, and precise laboratory results.
MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Performs a variety of technical laboratory procedures according to National, Hospital and Laboratory standards.
- Performs regularly scheduled and as required Maintenance activities on laboratory equipment.
- Operates equipment in accordance with established standards and procedures.
- Evaluates and validates new testing methods under the guidance of Laboratory Management
- Performs and interprets routine and complex medical laboratory procedures; recognizes deviation from expected results; analyzes and corrects problems using scientific principles.
- Understands, implements, and supports the established Quality Assurance, Quality Control and Safety procedures of the laboratory.
- Adheres to and complies with laboratory safety protocols and procedures.
- Prepares reagents when applicable and required.
- Responds to inquiries regarding test results, methodology, test specificity and sensitivity and other specific factors that can influence test results.
- Performs inventory of laboratory supplies; cleans equipment and work areas and disposes of contaminated materials.
- Performs related duties incidental to the work described herein.
- A minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Technology from an approved School of Medical Technology
- Certification and Registration as a Medical Technologist by The Council for Professions Supplementary to Medicine
- Prior experience in a hospital or clinical laboratory setting is preferred.
- Experience across multiple laboratory disciplines is an asset.
- Demonstrated knowledge of laboratory equipment, instrumentation, and reagents used in clinical testing.
- Thorough understanding of laboratory safety practices, including safe handling of blood, body fluids, and other biological specimens.
- Proficiency in performing a wide range of routine and specialized laboratory tests with accuracy and precision.
- Strong ability to document, interpret, and clearly communicate laboratory test results in accordance with established standards.
- Effective time management and organizational skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and meet required deadlines.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, with sound professional judgment.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary healthcare team.
- Ability to work effectively in a laboratory environment that may at times be fast-paced and demanding, consistent with the nature of clinical laboratory operations.
- Ability to handle patient information on a daily basis with professionalism, objectivity, and strict adherence to confidentiality requirements.
- Willingness and flexibility to adjust work schedules as required, including occasional extended hours.
- Demonstrated capacity to maintain sound judgment, accuracy, and high-quality performance under conditions of physical and mental pressure.
